EXPERIENCES & ACTIVITIES

Live It, Don't Just See It

What You Can Do

Experiences Chosen for Depth

Adventure, culture, wellness and nature — woven together.

Our experiences are chosen for how they let you engage with Sri Lanka rather than simply pass through it. Whether that means slowing down at a wellness retreat or getting your heart rate up on a surf break, each one is built around genuine immersion. From wildlife safaris to hiking and surfing, our curated list of things to do in Sri Lanka covers the full range of Sri Lanka tours and activities.

01

Wellness, Ayurveda & Mindful Retreats

Sri Lanka has practised Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and today its retreats combine that tradition with restful settings. Expect personalised consultations, herbal treatments, and treatment plans tailored to your specific constitution rather than a generic spa menu. Many retreats pair treatments with yoga, meditation and a simple Ayurvedic diet to support the process. Set against jungle, hill or coastal backdrops, these stays work well as a slower few days woven into a longer trip, or as a dedicated wellness journey in their own right.

02

Whale and Dolphin Watching Expeditions

Sri Lanka’s waters host some of the largest animals on Earth, with blue whale and sperm whale sightings possible off both the south and east coasts. Boats depart early morning from Mirissa, from November to April, or Trincomalee, from May to September, when seas are calmest and sightings most reliable. Dolphin pods, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, are a regular and thrilling accompaniment. We work only with operators who keep a respectful distance from the animals, prioritising responsible viewing over guaranteed close encounters.

03

Wildlife Safaris & Nature Encounters

From leopards in Yala to elephant gatherings in Minneriya, Sri Lanka’s national parks offer wildlife encounters that rival far larger safari destinations. Safaris are led by experienced trackers in open 4×4 jeeps, timed for the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. Beyond the marquee species, expect sightings of crocodiles, sloth bears, exotic birdlife and rich reptile life depending on the park. We can combine several parks in one trip for travellers who want variety, or focus on a single reserve for a more in-depth visit.

04

Snorkelling & Scuba Diving

Coral reefs off Pigeon Island, Hikkaduwa and the Kalpitiya peninsula offer accessible snorkelling and diving for all experience levels. Warm, clear waters support reef fish and turtles, and, in the right season, reef sharks, alongside several well-preserved wreck dives for certified divers. Kalpitiya’s offshore reefs and Trincomalee’s Pigeon Island National Park are particular highlights, each best visited in its respective calm-water season. Equipment, instruction and guided trips can all be arranged locally, including short introductory dives for first-timers.

05

Culinary Journeys & Local Food Experiences

Sri Lankan cuisine is built on rice, coconut and a blend of spices that shifts noticeably from region to region. Our culinary experiences range from hands-on cooking classes in a family home to street-food walking tours through the markets of Colombo or Jaffna. Guests can learn to make hoppers, kottu and traditional curries, or simply taste their way through a region with a knowledgeable local host. These experiences work particularly well when woven into a longer itinerary as an evening activity in Kandy, Galle, or on the south coast.

06

Surfing Adventures

Sri Lanka’s dual coastlines mean there is a rideable break somewhere on the island for most of the year, from Arugam Bay’s famous right-hander to Weligama’s gentle, beginner-friendly waves. The south and west coasts work best from November to April, while the east coast, led by Arugam Bay, peaks from May to September. Lessons and board rental are widely available for beginners, while experienced surfers can chase more advanced breaks with local guides. Many surf towns double as relaxed social hubs, making this as much about the wider beach-town atmosphere as the waves themselves.

07

Hiking, Trekking & Viewpoint Trails

The central highlands and southern rainforests offer trails for every fitness level, from the short sunrise climb up Little Adam’s Peak to more demanding treks through the Knuckles range. Guided hikes typically start early to catch cooler temperatures and clearer views before the midday cloud sets in. Options range from tea-estate walks and waterfall trails to the overnight pilgrimage to the summit of Adam’s Peak. We match the trail to the traveller, whether that means a gentle morning walk or a serious full-day trek.

08

Scenic Train Journeys & Slow Travel Routes

The rail line between Kandy and Ella is regularly ranked among the world’s most scenic train journeys, winding through tea estates, tunnels and mist-covered valleys. Carriages range from unreserved third class, for an authentic and social ride, to reserved observation cars with wider windows and guaranteed seating. We recommend booking reserved seats well in advance during peak season, particularly on the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch. Beyond the signature route, several other rail journeys offer a slower, more contemplative way to move between regions.

09

Heritage & Archaeological Immersions

Beyond a quick photo stop, our heritage experiences dig into the history behind Sri Lanka’s ancient sites, from Sigiriya’s engineering to Polonnaruwa’s royal court life. Guided visits are led by knowledgeable local guides who bring context to the ruins, frescoes and inscriptions. We can also arrange lesser-visited sites, such as Yapahuwa, for travellers who want to go beyond the main circuit. These experiences suit history-minded travellers who prefer depth over speed.

10

Village Life & Rural Living Experiences

A step away from tourist infrastructure, our village experiences connect guests with everyday rural life: ox-cart rides, canoe crossings, home-cooked meals and traditional farming methods. These visits are arranged respectfully and in partnership with the communities involved, ensuring benefit rather than a staged performance. Guests typically spend a few hours with a local family, learning skills such as coconut scraping, rice cultivation or clay-pot cooking. It is one of the most memorable ways to understand Sri Lanka beyond its landmarks.

11

Tea Country Immersions

Sri Lanka’s tea industry shaped the highlands’ landscape, architecture and economy, and remains highly visible today in the estates around Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Haputale. Factory tours walk guests through the withering, rolling and drying process, ending with a tasting of freshly made Ceylon tea. Estate walks through the manicured rows offer some of the island’s most photogenic views, especially in the early morning. For a deeper look, we can arrange time with the tea pluckers themselves to understand the physical work behind every cup.

12

Spiritual & Temple Trail Journeys

From the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy to the multi-faith pilgrimage town of Kataragama, Sri Lanka’s spiritual sites reflect centuries of layered belief and practice. We can build itineraries around specific traditions, whether a Buddhist temple circuit, Ramayana-linked Hindu sites, or a broader look at the island’s religious diversity. Timing a visit around a festival, such as Kandy’s Esala Perahera, adds a vivid, once-a-year dimension. These journeys are paced to allow quiet time at each site, not just a quick stop.
