Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka’s most important pilgrimage destinations, attracting devotees from Buddhist, Hindu and indigenous Vedda communities. The sacred town is dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo and features temples, shrines and religious sites representing different traditions living together. The annual Kataragama Esala Festival brings thousands of pilgrims for colourful rituals and celebrations.
